Jules Baenziger and John Baccigaluppi (TapeOp!) phone it in from the Hangar in Sacramento, CA. You think I'd be tired of the whole singer-songwriter act by now, but then someone comes along like Jules who does something so incredible and so unique so effortlessly that all preconceptions are immediately tossed out the window. There are shades of other artists in Sea of Bees, of course- Marissa Nadler and Joanna Newsom in Jules' voice, for instance- but there's no mistaking her for anyone but herself. It's funny that someone seemingly so shy can sing so arrestingly, but there you have it- confidence mingled with vulnerability, songs you just can't forget.
