Julianna Barwick phones it in from Queens, NY. Things have been lining up nicely for Julia ever since Diplo Twittered that her music "sounds like Care Bears making love," but heck, she'd already toured Europe and been asked to remix Radiohead! At any rate, the attention is well, well deserved. Combining interests in various a cappella and choral musics with ambient and minimalist or avant-garde classical (I'm just guessing here), Julianna creates beautiful (I'd go so far as to say 'heavenly'), cynicism-melting hymns using nothing more than her voice and a looping station, harmonizing with herself again and again. The peaks are crystalline, the fragile heights almost dizzying. Highly recommended, especially for fans of other recent Phoning It In faves Grouper, Inca Ore, or Julia Holter.
