Kill Rock Stars' Thao Nguyen (sans her Get Down Stay Down) phones it in from Portland, OR in the midst of recording her new album.
A little jazzy, a little punky, a lot sardonic, and never formulaic, you couldn't mistake Thao for anyone else. Though her singing drawl might remind you a little of Cat Power's, the similarity ends there- Thao's music is more gleeful (a little wrathful, even), more shyly exuberant. Armed with melodies like barbs, Thao was definitely one of the most surprising and delightful songwriters to emerge last year.
